There’s no better time than summer to declutter and turn your unwanted items into extra cash — and in Pittsburgh, yard sale season is in full swing by July. If you're ready to lighten your home and host a successful sale, a little planning and smart organization go a long way.
At Sunny Spaces Organizing, we help Pittsburgh families reclaim their homes year-round — and summer is the perfect time to declutter and clear out with purpose. Here’s how to prep like a pro:
Step 1: Declutter with the Yard Sale in Mind
Before you even pick a sale date, walk through your home with a fresh perspective. Look in closets, basements, garages, and toy bins. Ask yourself:
Have we used this in the last year?
Would I buy this again today?
Do I have multiples of this item?
Create a temporary “yard sale zone” in your home to collect sale-worthy items. Sort into categories like kids’ items, kitchenware, home decor, and books.
Bonus Tip: Pittsburgh’s humid summers are a good time to let go of items prone to mold or rust in basements or garages — think unused tools, furniture, or electronics.
Step 2: Price to Sell (But Don't Undersell!)
People love a good bargain, but they also love neatness and clarity. Use pre-printed pricing stickers or masking tape and a Sharpie to label everything.
Keep prices in whole numbers (e.g., $1, $5, $10).
Group items in bins: “All books $1,” “Toys $2 each or 3 for $5.”
Be willing to negotiate — especially toward the end of the day.
Pro Tip: Use painter’s tape on delicate items like kids’ books or wood furniture to avoid damage.
Step 3: Make It Easy to Shop
Presentation matters! Think of your yard sale as a pop-up boutique.
Use folding tables, crates, or a clothing rack (borrow or rent if needed).
Group like items together: kids’ stuff, housewares, clothing, etc.
Display items neatly — clothes folded or hung, shoes paired, electronics plugged in to show they work.
Place higher-value or eye-catching items toward the front to draw people in.
Don’t forget to have small bills and change ready, plus reusable bags for buyers!
Step 4: Spread the Word
Make sure your sale gets noticed — both online and in your neighborhood.
Post in local Facebook groups like Pittsburgh Yard Sale, North Hills Yard Sale, or Pittsburgh Moms Buy/Sell/Trade.
List it on Craigslist, Yard Sale Treasure Map, or Nextdoor.
Add signs around your neighborhood with big arrows, the date/time, and address — keep them uniform and easy to read.
Pro Tip: Mention “multi-family,” “baby gear,” or “tools” if you have them — those keywords bring in traffic.
Step 5: Donate What Doesn’t Sell
Once your sale is over, don’t bring those items back into your house. Schedule a donation pickup or drop them off that day or weekend. Here are a few great Pittsburgh-area donation centers:
East End Community Thrift (Thrifty) – Benefits local nonprofits
The Blessing Board – Accepts furniture and household items (limited pickup areas)
Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania – Multiple drop-off sites
St. Vincent de Paul Pittsburgh – Offers pickups in many areas
Once Upon a Child or Kid to Kid (for kids’ items) – May purchase gently used clothing or toys
Still have high-quality pieces? Consider local consignment shops or Facebook Marketplace.
